Chapter Four

Toby put the dishes in the dishwasher while Damon dealt with some issue downstairs, then he went to sketch out some ideas for work. Was it possible to show the whole PTSD scenario with clay? Was that even cool? He did a series of drawings, just working it through while he waited.

He thought he heard the door downstairs close, then he definitely heard footsteps coming up the stairs. Damon was on his way back up. He drew faster, just wanting to get the stuff out of his brain.

The door to the apartment opened and closed. “Baby?”

“In the kitchen.” He gathered up the papers.

Damon came in, looking handsome in his jeans and a tight T-shirt. “What’s all this?”

“Nothing. Work.” Art that he wasn’t sure was even appropriate.

“Your work isn’t nothing—it’s wonderful. Can I see?” Damon asked, coming over.

“Not yet. I’m not sure it isn’t offensive yet. I mean, it might be and I don’t want it to be.”

“Why would it be offensive?”

Toby felt his cheeks heat. “Because it’s about Christian, sort of. Inspired by him, by his problem.”

“That’s fascinating, Toby. If you’re worried about how he’ll react, you could talk to him about it.”

“I don’t know. That’s super personal. I’m just goofing off.” He wasn’t ready to share the sketch yet.

“Your work is personal. Very personal. I should know, hmm? Being one of your subjects. Or at least what’s between us is.”

“Yeah. You don’t mind, though. You wanted the statues.”

Damon had loved them.

Damon confirmed it. “I love those statues. They’re us. They’re passion. They’re perfect.”

“I hadn’t even known I was looking for you when I started the first one.” He looked for a place to stash his drawing. He needed to bring a sketchbook over if he was going to stay overnight.

“Why don’t you leave that in the living room on the coffee table? It should be safe there,” Damon suggested.

“Thanks. I stole paper.” Toby knew Damon wouldn’t mind, but it was only polite to admit it.

Damon laughed out loud for him. “I think I can give you a piece of paper or two.”

“Thank you. All my supplies are at the studio and my apartment.”

“We’ll have to get you some to keep here,” Damon suggested. “Because I want to make this a regular thing.”

Toby liked the sound of that. “Yeah? I don’t cramp your style?”

“You are my style, baby.”

God, he did love the things Damon said. He wished he was so suave, but he just wasn’t.

Damon’s mouth covered his, the kiss quick and hard. “Did you need more time with your art?”

“No. No, I’ll mess with it later. I got it on paper—that’s what’s important.”

“Out of your brain, hmm?”

They went into the living room and Damon pointed out a large coffee table book. “They would stay flat between the pages of that book.”

“Thanks.” Toby slid them in. He was dating a guy with coffee table books. This one was wild animals, the tiger on the cover stunning, eyes alive and seeming to follow him as he moved back from the table.
